HEX & BONES

A browser dice roguelite: pick a starter, build your dice between rooms, and let the combinations play out against three bosses and endless mode.

HEX & BONES gameplay
HEX & BONES / ROLL
HEX & BONES is a standalone browser dice roguelite. You begin with two six-sided dice, four rolls, and 20 gold, and choose a specialty for your first die before the run starts. Every room gives you four rolls to reach a target score, and each roll throws your whole pool and adds its points automatically - there is no holding, banking, or splitting hands, so a run is about growing a stronger set of dice. Only multiples of a kind form combos, and each extra matching face raises the whole roll's multiplier: a pair is x1.5, three of a kind is x2, and two pairs are x2. Pips are face numbers while upgrades change scoring values, so the two stay separate. Each cleared room opens a shop with three distinct random offers, fixed for that visit. Players buy extra dice and face-specific perks such as permanent value, landing weight, and Bloom, along with rarer effects like Second Chance, Echo, Momentum, Last Resort, and a minimum-value safety net. Fragile dice that land on 1 three times in a row can break, so a build has to be kept healthy as well as strong. Five rooms make a zone, and three bosses - the Root Keeper, the Mirror Choir, and the Hollow King - escalate the rules before the campaign's finish. Defeating them unlocks endless play that keeps the same build going. Runs save automatically and resume after a reload, and end screens summarize the biggest roll, the strongest die, broken dice, and a full scoring ledger. The Expedition Update reworked how dice are built between rooms, then let the combinations play out. The game is plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with no framework, backend, or build step, and saves live in the browser. Four supplied music tracks play on a separate toggle while every sound effect is synthesized with the Web Audio API, so gameplay needs no network. A dependency-free harness runs 42 checks over the starter choices, scoring order, boss rules, shop, fragility, and save handling.
